Florida Reading – January 2020

My goal is to read deep, deep, deep into the FL literature cannon…but this month I got a bit sidetracked, mostly by Stephen King because one of my goals is to read all of his books. Here’s what my beach bum reading looked like this month:

The Long Walk and Needful Things by Stephen King
I’m always up for Stephen King, this time I read The Long Walk which told the tale of the “long walkers” in a dystopian future. It’s a walking contest where the last one walking wins “The Prize” and everybody else gets dead. In Needful Things a demon opens a store in a small Maine Town and raises hell. Long Walk was spellbinding. Needful Things was meh, as far as Stephen King books go.

Nemesis by Agatha Christie
Another Ms. Marple mystery, this time she works on a murder mystery while taking a tour of England’s gardens. I must say–Agatha Christie is the queen of mystery, although I’d say this book would land on a middle rung as far as her best-to-worst work goes.

How To Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie
I like the old self-help books because they are the best. Today’s pop-psyche books are just rehashings of the classics. Go to the source material! This one was very good.

Team Rodent by Carl Hiaasen
Carl Hiaasen asserts that Disney is so good they’re evil. From how perfect their theme parks are to how a Disney store in NY’s Time Square can chase out the neighboring porn shops. So, Hiaasen revels in the Disney dirt, which this book shares.

I’m gonna recommit to reading more FL based books in February!
