This Saturday, November 11, everybody will have free access to the spectacular Florida State Park system in honor of our veterans!
It’s long been my dream to visit every single Florida State Park and having a free admission day will certainly help get one more down. In the meantime, here’s a recommendation of some of my favorite Florida State Parks that I have had the good fortune to experience.
Hillsborough River State Park: This is one of the original Florida State Parks and is still one of the best. I love the three mile Florida Trail hike (not to be confused with the National Scenic Florida Trail) which winds along the Hillsborough River.
Rainbow Springs State Park: In my humble opinion, Rainbow Springs is the best spring to visit in all of Florida. It is beautiful and a fantastic swimming hole. There is also ruins of an old zoo and some decent hiking trails.
Honeymoon Island State Park: This is quite possibly home to my favorite beach in all of Florida. It’s pretty good. There is also hiking, a pair of bald eagles, and lots of nature to explore.
Weeki Wachee Springs State Park: This is where the mermaids live, and there is also a waterpark, spring to swim in, and river to explore. If you plan on trying to go here for free you must get there early, because once the park reaches capacity they will not let you enter, and the park often reaches capacity.
*The Skyway Fishing Pier is not free.
