The Miami Heat is South Florida’s professional basketball team. Established in 1988 as an expansion team, the Heat have won NBA titles in 2006, 2012, and 2013 and have been home to such notable players as Dwayne Wade, Shaquille O’Neil, Chris Bosh, and LeBron James.
The Heat play at the American Airlines Arena, which is on the water in downtown Miami, near where all the cruise ships load up. I used to spend time here once a week and am familiar with the area because I used to work on those ships. It was our main embarkation port.
However, I never went to a Heat game until my wife bought me some tickets and we did a weekend in Miami. It was great fun! We went to a Heat vs. Bulls game (I’m a Bulls fan since I grew up in the Chicagoland area). The arena was packed and the Heat ended up winning the game.
If you are in Miami, I can definitely recommend checking out a Heat game. There’s also a lot of restaurants and other interesting things in the area too, so you can make an entire day out of it. Also, I was happy to check the Miami Heat off my list of teams to see. (Even though I’m a basketball fan, I’ve only been able to check off three basketball teams on the NBA grand tour challenge–the Chicago Bulls, the L.A. Clippers, and the Miami Heat. I hope that the next team I’ll check off is the Orlando Magic.)
